A pharmacist has been charged with selling controlled substances over the counter without a prescription following a six-month undercover investigation.
The pharmacist, Jagga Grandhi, 59, of Long Grove, allegedly sold Vicodin, Xanax and morphine for cash at RX Tower Pharmacy, 15 Tower Court, off Washington Street near the Greenleaf Avenue medical corridor.

In highly orchestrated raids around the world this week, Interpol officers in Europe, drug agents in the United States and task forces from Sweden to Singapore confiscated counterfeit prescription drugs in an attempt to stem a rapidly growing criminal business that preys on financially pressed consumers looking for bargains.
The operation, code-named Pangea, is an effort to fight back against fraudulent prescription drug businesses, which have become a $28-million industry in the United States alone.

Patients can make savings of nearly €50 a month by switching from branded to generic versions of some drugs, new figures reveal.
Although the price difference varies for many common drugs, the gap is significant for the Alzheimer's disease medicine Aricept , which costs €101.61 in branded form but €53.71 for the generic version.
In another example, figures obtained by the Irish Independent show a difference of over €11 in the ulcer medicine Protium -- €31.44 versus €20.04.

LAKEPORT The Lakeport Safeway Pharmacy has scheduled two swine flu shot clinics for Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.
The pharmacy has a limited amount of vaccinations and will give priority to at-risk groups, including people age 11 to 24, internasal mist for people as young as 8, pregnant women and emergency care workers, said Mike Maravich, Lakeport Safeway Pharmacy manager.
"We as pharmacists may pull out priority people and bring them to the front of the line," Maravich said.

Federal prosecutors expect a former Marshall University cardiology fellow to plead guilty after he became the first person charged with crimes related to an alleged prescription drug operation involving millions of dollars a year, according to court documents.
A two-count information filed in U.S. District Court charges Dr. John Theodore Tiano with conspiracy to misuse a registration number, along with aiding and abetting health care fraud.
The alleged crimes took place between 2005 and March 31, 2007

The Clinton Substance Abuse Council is participating in a statewide effort to reduce the abuse of prescription medications and to ensure their proper disposal.
According to a press release, Clinton County is part of the state's TakeAway program.
The Iowa Board of Pharmacy and the Iowa Pharmacy Association teamed to offer the program at 300 locations in Iowa.

The FDA sent 22 warning letters this week to ISPs, Web site operators and domain-name registrars seeking the shut down of 136 sites that sell drugs in violation of U.S. law.
Many of the sites would sell medication without requiring a prescription, said Karen Riley, FDA spokeswoman.
Other violations included advertising drugs that were stated as FDA approved but have not been, Riley said.

ET has obtained a warrant unsealed by a Nevada judge on Friday against the Las Vegas pharmacy that was searched last July as part of the investigation into Michael Jackson 's death and where officials believe Dr. Conrad Murray may have obtained the drug Propofol.
